Christmas Light Switch On Cancelled

Newton Abbot News | 0 comments

The Christmas Lights festivities in Newton Abbot scheduled for tomorrow have been canceled due to Storm Bert. The event was set to feature a variety of free activities for families and the much-anticipated arrival of Santa and his sleigh. However, with forecasts predicting strong winds and heavy rainfall, the Newton Abbot Town Council has made the difficult decision to cancel the celebrations for safety reasons.

“We can’t take any chances with people’s safety, and our insurance won’t cover us if we set up structures in these high winds,” explained Events Coordinator Natalie Hicks. “It’s disappointing for everyone, especially the families who were excited to join us, but it’s the best decision under the circumstances.” Despite this setback, Natalie and her team are eager for the remaining events in the holiday schedule.

“Our traditional Victorian Evening is happening on Wednesday, December 4. On Saturday, December 7, we’ll host a lantern workshop followed by a dog-friendly carol service at noon,” she said. “The Lantern Parade at 6:30 PM on December 11 is sure to be a highlight once again, and I’ll be leading the Mayor’s Carol Service at St Leonard’s Tower on December 18 at 6:30 PM.” “

Remember, we’ll also have late-night shopping on Wednesdays—December 4, 11, and 18—with Santa in town and his grotto open for photos. Additionally, street markets featuring food, drinks, and crafts will take place every Sunday on December 1, 8, and 15 from 10 AM to 3 PM.”

“Stay tuned for updates through our posters, social media channels, and our website for all the latest information.” “While Storm Bert may have disrupted our plans, the Christmas spirit in Newton Abbot extends far beyond just one day!”
